Folks of the American West

There are so many people who "made" the West that they cannot all be listed here. In fact, most are remembered primarily by their families which, of course, makes for the most significant memories of all!

Listed here you will find many men and women who made contributions to the culture of the American West; and what a diverse culture it was (and still is). Great leaders, both Native and Immigrant. Famous lawmen and infamous criminals...Industrious, forward-looking businessmen and those just in it for the immediate cash...Women who challenged the fiercest odds and those who flowed with the tide...and the youngsters who grew up in this wild, wide open time - a future with unlimited possibilities.

PIONEERS
Lewis and Clark, the explorers sent by Thomas Jefferson to inspect the new Louisiana Purchase and find a route to the Pacific Ocean which they did with the assistance of Sacagawea the daughter of a Shoshone chief.
Kit Carson, the name conjures up visions of the self-sufficient man, one who communicated and dealt fairly with the men he came to know. Elisha Stephens who, with others, crossed the Sierra Nevada into California on wagon trains in 1844 just a couple of years before the Donner Party.
